Finger Trap Handbags

2013, Leather

The relationship between an individual and their possessions is a complex one - does one own their belongings, or are they owned by them? The traditional handbag is designed for ease of use, with a handle that facilitates its grip. However, in my work, I sought to subvert this paradigm by incorporating the traditional Chinese finger trap, a toy that captures the user's fingers. The handbag then becomes the one in control, holding onto the individual rather than the other way around. This piece was crafted using an innovative interlocking technique, eliminating the need for stitching and highlighting the unique qualities of the leather material.
