Based out of Los Angeles California, James Piatt has extensive experience in industrial design and managing design teams within major US and international brands. Curious as to how a person interacts with a seating surface to achieve maximum comfort, he drew upon influences from his native Californian resources and his years of experience in leathercraft. His solution was the observatory lounge. He has been included in numerous museum exhibitions and has received awards and patents in recognition for his work.

“With a love for mid-century furniture and design, I have accumulated a large collection of chairs from this period. After spending considerable time surveying some of my favorite lounge chairs I found that many were lacking upper back, neck, and head support and were often small and confining. Even while seated in the most popular mid-century lounge chair I found myself needing to slouch down in it to feel my head was getting enough support. There are also only a few good options for consumers in a furniture landscape that is currently dominated by a small number of key players.”
